Surge in Volusia County pushes commercial developments

DAYTONA BEACH — A student dormitory and first building of a planned research technology park at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a movie theater at the long-awaited One Daytona development across from Daytona International Speedway are among the projects that received building permits in the first quarter.

The 48 permits for new commercial projects in Volusia County in this year’s first three months were the most in a quarter since the second quarter of 2008, according to Rob Ehrhardt, the county’s economic development director.
