Daytona to get another 4-star hotel when Westin opens in April

DAYTONA BEACH — It still says Desert Inn on the signs, but on the construction site beneath them there’s less and less evidence of the once infamous eyesore.

The property at 900 N. Atlantic Ave. is now in the midst of transformation into the highly anticipated four-star Westin Daytona Beach Resort & Spa.

“That (the signs) will be the last thing we take down, after the walls are up and painted,” Efrain Silva, vice president of operations for Summit Hospitality Management Group, said this past week on a tour of the site. Summit, the project’s developer, expects the new Westin to open by April 2017, the climax of a renovation that is now projected to cost nearly $30 million, up from a $24 million initial estimate.
